Today was the St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser, known throughout the Xavier community as the “day when kids go bald,” or “the day when everyone gathers in the commons gym to watch kids and teachers shave their hair.”
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a non-profit organization with a sole purpose towards curing childhood cancer. Every year on St. Baldrick’s Day, the Xavier community comes together for a noble and dignified cause: raising money for childhood cancer research.
Cancer is a somber subject. Many people know or have lost family members to various types of cancer. It is a horrible reality in our world, with childhood cancer being especially painful, considering that children may never get to live out their dreams. So, in response to childhood cancer, for over a decade, the Xavier community has partnered with the St. Baldrick’s foundation in order to raise thousands of dollars for childhood cancer research.
Participants raise donations from friends, family members, and community supporters before the event, and then, during community, lunch, or free periods, shavees are watched by students and faculty while their hair is shaved.
Beyond the excitement of the event itself, the true impact of St. Baldrick’s lies in the funds raised for research. Childhood cancers receive far less research funding compared to many other diseases, making community fundraising events like this especially important.
Every dollar raised contributes to studies, treatments, and clinical trials aimed at improving survival rates and quality of life for children battling cancer. This year, Xavier has raised just shy of $25,000 in funds for St. Baldricks as of Mar, 13, 2026, at 5:15 PM.
At Xavier this year, there were over thirty participants, a small but mighty group of Xavier students and faculty. Almost sixty people, scattered across the greater Xavier community, donated to the shavees. Their generosity should be commended, as it is what truly aids the fight against childhood cancer.
St Baldrick’s Day is an example of the Xavier community’s commitment to justice and service. It shows who we are at Xavier, and should inspire a great sense of pride among the student body.
